Paul declares in Galatians 5:1 - “It was for freedom that Christ set you free.” Then he warns against submitting again to a yoke of slavery. He is speaking about legalism. But he also knows that the tendency is for the pendulum to swing to the other side. And so, he warns his readers against using their freedom as a covering for evil. That is license. It addresses the person who concludes, “Well, I am free. I can do anything I please.” Paul argues for a balanced perspective: living free, neither stifling freedom with legalism nor flaunting freedom with license.
