How To Have A Gospel Impact At Work

For many of us, work is a significant part of our lives. Whether we eagerly anticipate the start of the workday or approach it with a sense of dread, the truth remains: work consumes a significant portion of our time. As followers of Christ, it's not just about navigating the 9-to-5 routine; it's about honoring God in the workplace. God has placed you in your workplace for a myriad of different reasons, but one of those reasons is to have a gospel impact. How do you do that? Let's explore five ways to bring the gospel into your work life.

Number 1: Do Great Work!

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,” — Colossians 3:23

This passage challenges us to approach our work wholeheartedly, not merely as a means of pleasing people but as an act of worship. Your desk, your tools, your responsibilities—they are all opportunities to honor God.

Consider the impact of being the employee who consistently goes above and beyond, who innovates and brings creativity into the workspace. By doing great work, you not only honor God but also reflect His character to those around you. Your commitment to excellence becomes a silent testimony that may make someone curious about what drives you. This could be an opportunity to talk to them about Jesus.

Number 2: Have A Great Attitude!

“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Proverbs 17:22

This proverb paints a vivid picture of the power of joy. A joyful heart is compared to good medicine, bringing healing to the soul. Contrastingly, a crushed spirit dries up the bones, symbolizing the debilitating effect of a negative attitude. As ambassadors of Christ, our demeanor holds transformative potential in the workplace.

Choosing to radiate joy, even when circumstances are difficult, can dramatically affect the atmosphere of your workplace. Choose to be a source of encouragement for your colleagues. A positive attitude can become a light, drawing others toward the joy found in a relationship with Christ.

Number 3: Help Others Be Their Best

”So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” — Galatians 6:10

This passage encourages us to look for opportunities to do good, even on the job. In the workplace, this means lending a hand to those struggling with projects or tasks. It means investing time and effort to help others improve and excel in areas where they may be less proficient.

By actively contributing to the success of your colleagues, you not only do good but you also build friendships. Your willingness to assist others in their professional growth demonstrates God's love in action and positions you as a trustworthy friend.

Number 4: Pray For Those You Work With

“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people,” — 1 Timothy 2:1

The call to prayer in 1 Timothy 2:1 is a powerful tool for making a gospel impact at work. This passage reminds us of two things: First, we are instructed to pray for all people, including those we work with. Second, we are reminded that God is the one who opens hearts, changes lives, and creates an atmosphere where the good news of Jesus can take root. As you pray for those you work with, ask God to help people see Jesus, to reveal His love to them, and to provide opportunities for you to share the message of Christ. Remarkably, through prayer, you become a catalyst for change in the lives of those around you.

Number 5: Cultivate Genuine Gospel-Centered Friendships

“So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.” — 1 Thessalonians 2:8

The apostle Paul reveals the depth of his relationship with the Thessalonians. It wasn't merely about sharing the gospel; it was about sharing their lives. Cultivating genuine, gospel-centered friendships means going beyond the surface, being authentically present, and investing in the well-being of your colleagues.

As you build real connections, opportunities will naturally arise to share the gospel. These are not forced encounters but organic moments where the love of Christ is at work through genuine friendship. Invite your colleagues to lunch, share your life openly, and be an example of Christ's love through your actions and words.

You are not at your workplace by accident; you are placed there by your loving and purposeful God. Among the many reasons, one stands out—you are there to make a difference in the lives of those around you. Remember, God can use you, right where you are, to make a profound impact. By applying these ideas, you become an agent of change, allowing the gospel to flourish in the hearts of people in your workplace. Embrace the calling, be faithful, and watch as God uses you to bring His transforming love to your workplace.
