Passage: John 9

In John, chapter nine, we encounter the question why bad things happen. In this story about a man blind from birth, Jesus is asked about the cause of the man’s blindness, but he answers in terms of its purpose – not fate, not chance, not karma, but purpose. The lesson in this story helps us understand the purposes of God in our own lives, even when bad things happen to us.

Things to look for in reading John, chapter 10:

1) Notice Jesus’ use of a familiar occupation to introduce two more of his seven “I am” statements. What attributes of this occupation fit with what Jesus is saying?

2) How did the Pharisees react to Jesus’ claims that he and the Father are “one?” Why this reaction?
