In Nicodemus, Jesus comes up against the best that religion has to offer.  In his conversations with this learned scholar, Pharisee and member of the Sanhedrin, Jesus explains that entrance into the kingdom of God is through a spiritual birth.  This necessity of being born again, or born from above, is at the heart of the required response to the Gospel today as well.  Jesus did and does what religion cannot do.
