To understand the Christmas story, and our own story, we need to wed the human and the divine.  Think of the human elements of that first Christmas: a young man and young woman, an arduous trip to Bethlehem, unfavorable conditions in an unfamiliar setting.  Then there are the shepherds on a routine, perhaps boring, night.  But then God breaks into the story: heaven opens; angels sing.  We need both parts of the story to get the full picture.  And the same is true in our own lives.  We know the human side of our story, but it is essential that we not miss the divine side, for it is that which rounds out the picture and brings God and his purposes into the equation.
