Passage: Colossians 2:16–23

The Apostle Paul addresses the topic of legalism in his letter to the Colossian Christians.  Though the specific issues might be different today, the danger of legalism still exists.  One of the primary characteristics of legalism is to believe that your relationship with God is based on your works rather than Christ’s work.  A second characteristic is an emphasis on outward conduct rather than on inward thoughts and motivations; in a word, legalism is self-righteousness.  We also see legalism showing up in our relationship with others by imposing one’s application of a Biblical principle onto someone else.  And the results can be deadly.
