James does not present a very pretty picture of the tongue.  In fact, he describes it as a “fire from hell.”   Understanding the power of the tongue - power to direct, power to destroy, power to deceive - helps us to see why James exhorts us to be “slow to speak.”  Words matter.  Words have power - power for good and for bad.  Consider what James and Solomon, in the Proverbs, have to say about “words” and the impact they have in our relationships.
