First Corinthians, chapter thirteen, may be the most quoted description of love. But, why does Paul place this marvelous discourse on love in this section of his letter? Some believe it is out of place. On the contrary, Paul was very deliberate in its placement. The Apostle is dealing with another problem in the Corinthian church: misuse of spiritual gifts, in particular, some of the more spectacular, public gifts: tongues, prophesying and knowledge. But Paul says that because of their lack of love shown towards other believers, there was little value to the exercise of their gifts. This teaching is an indictment against any group of Christians who are more focused on spiritual gifts than spiritual graces.
