Why I Love the Book of Leviticus – Helpful Tips for Reading It!
By Brian Conaway
1. Remember the Big Story
Leviticus doesn’t appear out of nowhere! Israel has just been rescued from slavery, God’s presence has filled the tabernacle, and the question is: How can a holy God live among an imperfect people? Leviticus is God’s gracious answer. Keeping that storyline in mind makes the book feel purposeful rather than puzzling.
2. Don’t Get Stuck on the Details
Some sections—especially sacrifices, skin diseases, and purity laws—can feel overwhelming. A helpful mindset is: “I may not understand every detail, but I can understand what this teaches about God.”
Look for the themes behind the instructions:
- God is holy
- God provides a way back when we fail
- God cares about every part of life
- God shapes His people to reflect His character
3. Watch for How Leviticus Points to Jesus
The New Testament constantly draws on Leviticus. As you read, ask: “How does this prepare the way for Christ?” You’ll see:
- Jesus as the perfect sacrifice
- Jesus as the High Priest
- Jesus as the one who makes us clean
- Jesus fulfilling the call to holiness
- Leviticus becomes a treasure chest of gospel imagery.
4. Notice God’s Compassion and Justice
Leviticus isn’t just about rituals. It’s full of ethical teaching:
- Care for the poor
- Honest business practices
- Respect for parents
- Love for neighbor
- Protection for the vulnerable.
These chapters show that holiness is not just worship, it’s how we treat people!
5. See Holiness as Beauty, Not Burden
“Be holy, for I am holy” is not a threat. It’s an invitation to reflect God’s goodness.
Holiness in Leviticus is:
- Wholeness
- Integrity
- Compassion
- Purity of heart
- Justice in relationships
Reading with this lens transforms the book from intimidating to inspiring.
6. Notice How God Cares About Everyday Life
Leviticus covers food, clothing, work, illness, festivals, economics—everything.
This teaches a simple truth: God is not distant! God is involved in the ordinary!
For modern readers, it’s a reminder that faith is not a Sunday compartment but a wholelife calling.
7. Read Slowly, Not Perfectly
Leviticus rewards patience. You don’t need to understand every symbol or law to benefit from the book. If something confuses you, keep going. If something strikes you, pause and reflect.
A good rhythm is:
- Read the chapter
- Ask, “What does this show about God?”
- Ask, “How does this point to Jesus?”
- Ask, “What does this reveal about living as God’s people today?”
8. Expect to Be Surprised!
Many people discover that Leviticus is far richer, more pastoral, and more Christcentered than they ever imagined! Approach it with curiosity, and you may find yourself loving a book you once avoided.
