“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11

In times of uncertainty, it’s easy to get distressed … to feel hopeless … to convince yourself your life doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. We’ve all been there and these feelings are as human as they come.

But the truth is, we are called to more.

When you snap out of it and take a hard look at all the Lord has provided, what happens? Do you immediately fall to your knees (metaphorically or literally!) and thank Him for all he has done? Or do you have a hard time getting past the “woe is me”?

When we as believers calm down and remember who we are in Him, uncertainty should turn into opportunity – opportunity to walk fully into God’s plan and allow us to run into the storm.

Leaning into the promises of Jeremiah 29:11, the song “The Plans” gives us a catchy, toe-tappin’ way to recall one of the Old Testament’s most precious promises. As it rings out in the song’s memorable chorus:

“For I know the plans he has for me; Yes I know the plans he has for me, for my good. To give me a hope and a future.”

In Jeremiah 29, the Prophet Jeremiah writes from Jerusalem to those in exile in Babylon, encouraging the Jews to live their lives to the fullest and to trust in God’s perfect plan.

He instructs them to build houses, get married and plant gardens. Essentially, it seems he is telling his people to stop wallowing in their captivity but to LIVE, LOVE and REST in God’s perfect plan for each of their lives.

How apt is this scripture today? Should we despair over the state of politics, worry constantly about our budget or obsess over what someone posts about us on social media or says about us at work?

Jeremiah 29 says our current circumstances are temporary, but part of a larger framework, containing a meticulous blueprint sketched and honed to reveal the intricate, always-perfect will of God. It is telling us we are a vital piece in a larger puzzle, guaranteeing us hope and a future!

How can we not rejoice in this promise?

As our Worship Team leads us in “The Plans” over several Sundays in March , it is our hope this anthem works its way into your daily life and becomes a tune you can easily recall when doubt or uncertainty creeps in.

After all …

“If the mover of mountains is listening to me. Why should I worry? Why should I fear anything?”
