Final Farewells

04/13/14

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Promises, Promises - The Journey Home

Summary: The last two chapters in the book of Joshua record the Final Farewells that Joshua gave to the leaders of Israel and to the people of Israel. His exhortations are as applicable to us today as they were to Israel so long ago. Obey God; cling to God; love God; and choose God - all call us to a life of fidelity and allegiance to the God who has redeemed us. The challenge before Israel and before us is to guard against drifting away from God and chasing after the gods of the culture around us.

When God Asks You to Do Something Slowly

04/06/14

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Promises, Promises - The Journey Home

Summary: Joshua leads the Israelite army in their quest to conquer the land God had promised them and had said that He had given to them. God told them that He would drive out their enemies “little by little.” The conquest would be a slow process; it would be accomplished in a steady and strategic manner. For the believer today, the process of possessing the land (salvation) promised to us is also a slow one. It requires a steady effort; it means perseverance. The God who empowered the Israelites to possess the Promised Land and enter their rest is the same God who empowers us to possess our salvation and to enter our rest.

When God Asks You To Do Something Silly (TEXT ONLY)

03/30/14

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Promises, Promises - The Journey Home

Summary: The nation of Israel is now inside the Promised Land. They are poised to begin the conquest and take possession of the land God had promised them. But then God asks them to do some silly things. What would they do when God asked them to do something silly? The same question might be asked of us today. What do we do when God asks us to do something silly? (By silly, I mean silly from a human perspective). The requirement is the same as expected of Israel - obedience.

When God Asks You To Do Something Scary

03/23/14

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Promises, Promises - The Journey Home

Summary: This message takes the journey with Israel across the Jordan River. What a scary time for the nation! They are entering the unknown, the unfamiliar, the uncertain. They certainly had grounds for fear. But God calls the nation to exercise faith - truth in Him. Israel’s experience gives insight into the confidence, courage and conviction of God’s people and their response of faith while providing for us today the same encouragement to trust in the God who never changes.

Rahab: A Study in Grace (Text Only)

03/16/14

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Promises, Promises - The Journey Home

Summary: Rahab is a study in grace. Here is a woman in whom there was absolutely nothing to warrant God’s grace. But she had heard of Israel’s God and had come to believe in him. As Jericho is in the sights of the Israelite army, God works to save this believing woman and her family. God not only saves her; he creates a legacy through her. Rahab is one of five women mentioned in the genealogy of the Christ. What amazing grace!

Passing the Baton

03/09/14

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Promises, Promises - The Journey Home

Summary: Joshua faced a daunting task: taking over the leadership of the nation of Israel from Moses. There must have been ample room for fear, uncertainty, wondering if he was up to the task. God, in a private commissioning recorded in Joshua chapter one, encourages and exhorts Joshua with four great truths - four great assurances: his promise, his presence, his power and his precepts. These same four truths should encourage us in whatever situation or task faces us today.

A Call To Renewal

03/04/14

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Promises, Promises - The Journey Home

Summary: God judges Israel for their rebellion and unwillingness to enter the land following the spy mission (Numbers 13 and 14). None of that generation, save Joshua and Caleb, will realize the promise God made to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Now, it's forty years later. On the verge of their entering the Promised Land, Moses calls the people to renewal - a renewal of commitment to reaffirm their allegiance to the one true God. How applicable this call to renewal of commitment is for God's people today.

Giants In the Land

02/24/14

Speaker: Mark Petersburg

Series: Promises, Promises - The Journey Home

Summary: God made a covenant with Abraham, recorded in Genesis 12. One part of that covenant was the land of Canaan. After the Israelites came out of Egypt, they journeyed to Mount Sinai where God met with Moses and handed down instructions, laws, ordinances, and commands to govern the religious, personal and civic life as a unique nation. This new message series picks up where the Old Testament book of Exodus ends. We will journey with Israel from the spies sent into the land (Numbers 13-14) to the east bank of the Jordan River (where Moses gives his final charge) and on into the conquest of Canaan (book of Joshua).
